Holiday Readings

December 20, 2006 at 1:12 pm | In Readings, WEB 2.0 | 1 Comment

I have had a couple of requests for holiday readings and so I thought I would share a few ideas here.

For a good introduction to blogs, wikis, podcasts, RSS, and all things Web 2.0 you would be hard pushed to go past Coming Of Age: An Introduction To The NEW Worldwide Web This “booklet” is a free download and a great example of the online collaboration that Web 2.0 is enabling. (Source Website: http://www.ictineducation.org)

On a similar theme Will Richardson (find his blog here) presented a great presentation at NECC this year entitled A Web of Connections: Why the Read/Write Web Changes Everything. You can listen to a podcast of this presentation here

And I recently wrote a post about Social Software and Learning another great article from FutureLab. Again well worth the read.

And finally if you have any energy left you might like to look at the prereading for the TEACHnology moving toward 1:1 for Leaders course .

Have a great holiday whatever you get up to.

Flock – the social web browser

The social web browser.

If your getting into web 2.0 then you will have found the limits of Safari quite often. While Firefox works well where Safari won’t I have fallen in love with Flock.

Its a fully functional browser that integrates directly with Flickr to make uploading, sharing and using photos easier. It allows you to write blogs from within the browser and contains a really good RSS agregator. Start using these tools and you wont go back!!

Zotero

December 4, 2006 at 8:42 pm | In Questioning, Researching, Web 2.0 Applications | No Comments

Zotero is a production of the Center for History and New Media at George Mason University.

It is their attempt to create a tool that will help organise and record research sources, allow users to add notes and create an accurate bibliography. This tool may help to solve some of our challenges with students adequately referencing research tasks.

i would be interested to hear from some librarians who are willing to look at this tool and try it within a classroom setting. You will need the latest version of firefox (free download here) and then you can download the Zotero plugin here.
